Ula Sickle

2017

Canadian-Polish choreographer and performer Ula Sickle searches for forms of choreographic writing, where the culture coding and political power of ‘popular’ dancing can be revealed or where the musicality and materiality of the body itself can take center stage. For ICK Sickle creates one of the choreographies for 7EVEN.

Born in Toronto, Sickle studies Art History & Semiotics before coming to Brussels to study at P.ART.S, Performing Arts Research and Training Studios. Her theoretical knowledge informs her working process when she is creating new work. She often collaborates with artists from other domains such as the visual arts, contemporary music or architecture.

From 2008-2010 Ula pursues her interest in the visual arts and film, studying at Le Fresnoy, Studio National des Arts comtemporains. The pieces Looping the Loop (2009), Atomic 5.1 (2010) en Light Solos (2010-2013) all stem from her time at Le Fresnoy. Ula’s interest in looking for an alternative to the cannon of contemporary dance, has led her to seek out performers who embody other movement histories than her own. Examples of such pieces are Solid Gold (2010) and Kinshasa Electric (2014).
