Nicole Beutler

2014

Choreographer and theatre maker Nicole Beutler (Munich, 1969) lives and works in Amsterdam.  After studies of Fine Arts at Münster and München Arts Academies and of German Literature at the University of Münster, she came to study Dance and Choreography at the SNDO at the Theaterschool in Amsterdam where she graduated in 1997. Since, she produces work that is situated on the threshold of dance, performance and visual arts. She works from the conviction that fixed categorizations should be destabilized. With her precise and clear visual language she enables new perspectives on the complexity of human endeavor. The balance of content and form are cautiously weighed and underneath all her works dwells a socio-political drive.

In 2009 Nicole set up her company NBprojects. With NBprojects she is a regular player at Frascati Theater and Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam and touring in the Netherlands and abroad. Balancing at the threshold between categories the work is repeatedly performed at international dance- as well as theatre festivals and in the visual arts context.

Beutler’s latest works include: 6: THE SQUARE ; LIEFDESVERKLARING with six young performers in collaboration with playwright Magne van den Berg and youth production house fABULEUS, selected for Flemish Theatre Festival; 5: ECHO in collaboration with ICK, 4: STILL LIFE, SHIROKURO - a collaboration with concert pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama and lighting designer Jean Kalman, nominated for the Swan award for the best dance production and winner of the Dioraphte Prijs at the Dutch Dance Days 2014; ANTIGONE - a collaboration with puppet-theatermaker Ulrike Quade, 3: THE GARDEN, 2: DIALOGUE WITH LUCINDA, the solo 1: SONGS, winner of the prestigious VSCD Mimeprize, and the dance film DIAMOND DANCERS - in collaboration with filmmakers Helena Muskens & Quirine Racké.

For the sum of her activities Nicole was also nominated for the prestigious Amsterdamse Kunstprijs in 2014.
