Rôles de Danse - Dance with an A.I.
REPLAY PROJECT
Rôles de danse is an immersive and playful dance experience where participants embody fifteen roles drawn from the pre-choreographic elements signed by ICK’s directors Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. Each role proposes a way of being in the world and defines dynamic relationships with the environment and the beings that inhabit it. During each session, an AI guides the dancers through verbal cues while processing ever-changing spatial and behavioural elements to ensure that instructions are always relevant.
Each participant has the opportunity to embody their role during a short warm-up phase. The dancers are then asked to achieve objectives specific to their role, generating a range of different encounters and situations. At the end of the session they try to guess who played which role in the group. Rôles de danse offers a participatory and social experience wherein roles are expressed through gestures, postures and physical communication. Far from being a brake on interaction, the diversity of subjectivities enriches the encounters. In this way, Rôles de danse develops an aesthetic of connection that is unique to dance. Unique moments of life flourish, inviting participants to replay them and discover other facets of the experience by exploring new situations.
During a performance, we link together several play sessions (at least two). Each session lasts 15', including the warm-up phase. The performance can take place in a wide variety of locations: gallery, stage, public space, etc. The space required for a session of 15 players is at least 40 m2. The project was created by the Orbe collective (Paris) and ICK Dans Amsterdam, as part of the Replay project supported by Europe Créative. The aim of this project is to study and implement dance performances that can be replayed, both from the point of view of the dancers and the spectators. To achieve this objective, Replay combines choreographic creation and game design.
