CLUB IFFR x DANCE OF URGENCY - Bogomir Doringer

What do your dance moves tell you about yourself or people around you?

On Friday 2 February at 20.00, you are invited to join Bogomir Doringer for a conversation on archived dances, exploring how dance dynamically responds to societal challenges, showcasing resilience during times of crisis.

Watching people dancing in clubs can provide valuable insights into the collective psyche of society and the changing socio-political climate. The movements and styles danced on the dance floor are a reflection or a reaction to the time in which we live.

For the last 10 years, curator, researcher and artist Bogomir Doringer has explored the importance of dance by suspending cameras above dance floors and capturing present rituals from a bird-eye view. The project, known as I Dance Alone, observes and captures the unique expressions of individuals and groups immersed in the music and movement.

While some might see a dance floor as nothing more than weekend catharsis, Doringer has spotted the Dance of Urgency. This kind of dance emerges during times of individual and collective crises. It serves as a coping mechanism, empowering individuals and groups to navigate challenging periods. Contrary to the perception that dance arises from joy and prosperity, Doringer argues that dancing is rooted in personal and collective struggles against oppression, control, body politics, and pain.
