After their kaleidoscopic
HELL (2006),
Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten continue their journey through Dante’s La Divina Commedia with a [purgatorio] diptych. [purgatorio] IN VISIONE embodies the strength of fragility. Greco and Scholten return to the root of their artistic collaboration, to the visionary strength and obsession of a single human body. A powerful army of 7 x 3 strings and 7 x 1 brass instruments grinds against Greco’s body. This contrast creates a powerful tension between musical impulses and the body’s reactions to them. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, arranged by French composer Franck Krawczyk, accompanies the soloist on his via dolorosa. [purgatorio] IN VISIONE encompasses the pilgrimage of a striving body both at a standstill and in onwards movement.
