How does the dancing body reveal its cultural context?
The multi-annual project BEYOND, that kicked off in February 2009, is a growing network inspired by the ongoing dialogue between ICKamsterdam and its artistic directors Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten and several Asian artists and institutions. Established through the last years of extensive touring and educational exchange of ICKamsterdam and dance company Emio Greco | PC, these contacts are now being further explored.
Aiming to investigate the relevant concepts of Tradition and Innovation in contemporary art fields, BEYOND inspires an examination of the physical memories of the body among different cultures. On the one hand BEYOND addresses the creative and educational aspects of dance through workshops in which distinct body preparations and dance creative processes are combined. On the other hand, BEYOND positions and investigates the body as an intercultural space that is shaped by different physical experiences, socio-cultural backgrounds, perspectives of the world as well as a particular ‘knowledge that is embodied’ in dance.
With the project BEYOND ICKamsterdam strives to develop an educational and artistic network between Asian and European partners in order to create a continuous flow of experience towards the understanding of different movement languages, theories and practices of dance.
